SIGNAL ONE
A star some tens of times heavier than our sun exhausts its fuel and collapses past the point where any known force can hold it up. What forms is a black hole, a boundary in spacetime called an event horizon beyond which nothing, not even light, can climb back out. Everything that falls in, matter, radiation, the precise arrangement of particles that once spelled out a book or a body, seems to cross that boundary and disappear from the reach of any outside observer. For a long time this looked harmless, the same kind of loss you get when you burn a book: the ash is still, in principle, decodable if you track every photon and every scrap of soot.
SIGNAL TWO
Then came the calculation showing that black holes are not perfectly black. They radiate, slowly, through a quantum process operating near the horizon, and eventually evaporate entirely. The trouble is that this radiation, in the original calculation, looked thermal: featureless, carrying no imprint of what fell in. If that holds exactly, the black hole would vanish and take the information with it, genuinely destroy it, not merely scramble it past practical recovery. Quantum mechanics, as physicists understand it, forbids this. Evolution is supposed to be unitary, reversible in principle, so the past can always be reconstructed from a complete enough present. A black hole that truly erased information would break that rule. This tension between general relativity's horizon and quantum theory's insistence on preservation is not settled. It remains one of the genuinely open problems in theoretical physics.
SIGNAL THREE
Elsewhere, older, a different question about what survives destruction. In traditions that teach rebirth, a person dies, the body is burned or buried or given to a river, and something is said to carry forward, not memory intact, not the arrangement of matter, but a moral residue, karma, shaping the conditions of what comes next. This is not a claim about conserved physical information. It is a claim about the continuity of a self or a moral trajectory through a transformation that looks, from the outside, total.
SIGNAL FOUR
The two questions rhyme only at a distance. Both ask whether a process that looks like annihilation can really erase everything, or whether something is carried past it. But one is a claim internal to a mathematical theory of physical evolution, tested against calculation and, eventually, against observation of real evaporating or near-evaporating systems. The other is a claim about identity and ethical consequence that no measurement of radiation from a horizon could confirm or refute. Reaching for the horizon to explain the soul, or the soul to explain the horizon, mistakes a resemblance in shape for an argument.
