Card One: The Experiment Was a Complaint
Schrodinger did not propose his cat to describe how the world works. He proposed it as an objection. If quantum superposition, a system existing in a combination of states until measured, genuinely applies at every scale, then a sealed box containing a radioactive trigger should put the cat inside it into a superposition of alive and dead until someone opens the box and looks. Schrodinger thought this was absurd, and he built the thought experiment specifically to make the absurdity visible. It is a critique of extending microscopic quantum behavior straight up to the macroscopic world of cats and boxes, not a description of how cats actually behave.
Card Two: Asti, In Some Respect It Is
The Jain framework of sevenfold predication, syadvada, offers seven conditional viewpoints on any claim, each qualified rather than absolute. The first: from a certain standpoint, the thing is. Applied loosely here, not as physics but as a way of holding a claim carefully, the cat is alive, considered from the standpoint before the box was opened and the outcome was favorable.
Card Three: Nasti, In Some Respect It Is Not
The second predication: from a certain standpoint, the thing is not. The cat is not alive, considered from the standpoint in which the trigger fired. Both standpoints are partial. Neither claims to be the whole truth of the matter, which is closer to how the sealed box actually holds two possibilities without settling either.
Card Four: Asti Nasti, Successively It Is and Is Not
The third predication holds both viewpoints in sequence rather than at once, is and is not, considered one after the other rather than simultaneously. This is not a description of quantum superposition, where both states genuinely coexist in the mathematics before measurement. It is a much older tool for admitting that a single perspective rarely exhausts a complicated situation.
Card Five: Avaktavya, It Is Indescribable
The fourth predication says plainly that some claims resist description from any single standpoint at once. This is the card closest to Schrodinger's actual point. His cat was meant to show that a naive single description, simply alive or simply dead, fails to capture what the formalism says about the sealed system, and yet the correct quantum description of the isolated system does not map cleanly onto a common-sense description of a cat either.
Card Six: Asti Avaktavya, In Some Respect It Is and Is Indescribable
The remaining three predications combine the earlier ones with the fourth, is combined with indescribable, is not combined with indescribable, and both combined with indescribable. I will not pretend the Jain philosophers who developed this framework, centuries before quantum mechanics, were addressing physics at all. Syadvada was built to formalize humility about metaphysical claims in general, not to model isolated quantum systems. Any resemblance to Schrodinger's setup is a resemblance of method, not of subject.
Card Seven: What the Seven Cards Are For
What I take from setting these two frameworks side by side is not that one anticipated the other. It's that both, independently, arrived at the same discomfort with flat, unqualified statements. Schrodinger's box shows that treating superposition as literally true of cats produces something none of us actually believe. Syadvada shows that treating any single standpoint as the whole truth produces something similarly incomplete. Neither framework tells you to stop asking what is actually the case. Both tell you to be honest about which standpoint you are asking from when you answer.
