I. In an old account, a god's palace is hung with a net that stretches in every direction without end, and at each knot of the net sits a jewel. Every jewel reflects every other jewel. Look closely at one and you find, faint and multiplying, the image of the whole net inside it.
What makes the image work is not that the jewels resemble one another, but that none of them holds an image of itself alone.
II. Pluck a jewel from the net and set it on a table and it reflects nothing worth noting. Its brightness was never a private property. It was a function of position within the whole. Remove the relation and the shine goes with it.
Centuries later, a different kind of net took shape.
III. A page on a network of pages means something partly because of what links to it and what it links out to. A node with no edges is inert data, unreadable by the system built to read it. The structure echoes the older image without being it.
Physics, meanwhile, offers its own picture of a whole folded into a part, though a far narrower one.
IV. Cut a photographic plate recorded with the right interference pattern, and each fragment still reconstructs the full scene, dimmer and less resolved, because the information for any one point was spread across the whole plate. This is a specific, well-understood optical phenomenon. It is not a general law about wholes and parts, and it does not, by itself, prove anything about jewels or gods.
Some theoretical physicists suspect something structurally similar might describe gravity itself.
V. The holographic principle, still an active and unproven research program, proposes that the physics inside a volume of space might be fully encoded on its boundary. It is a serious idea under real mathematical pressure, not an established fact about our universe, and it should not be read as confirmation of an older myth it merely rhymes with.
None of these borrowed images says what to do with a net once you have built one.
VI. A feed trained to keep showing you what resembles what you already clicked is a jewel array where every jewel has learned to copy its nearest neighbor instead of the whole net. What was constitutive relation becomes claustrophobic repetition, a system that mistakes an echo of itself for the world.
The old net never promised that all reflections were equally worth having.
VII. The commentators who elaborated this image were not admiring a design; they used it to argue that no single thing has a separate existence of its own, that what a thing is depends on everything around it. That is a claim about how things are, not a compliment paid to whichever network happens to exist at the moment.
VIII. The net has no edge in the story. Every actual net does: a myth stops being told, a fiber run reaches a terminated port, an optical plate has a boundary past which no more of the pattern was recorded. The edge is not a flaw in the metaphor. It is where the metaphor hands the question back to whoever built the thing.
