One. A Habit of Speech
In certain older Indian philosophical circles, there was a discipline about how you were allowed to say things. You could not simply assert that a jar exists. You had to say that, from a certain standpoint, the jar exists, because from another standpoint, considering it as clay rather than as a jar, or considering some future moment when it will be shards, the same assertion could mislead. This is not weakness or hedging for its own sake. It is a claim about how many angles a true statement usually depends on, quietly, without saying so.
Two. What "Standpoint" Costs
Qualifying every claim sounds tedious until you notice what it prevents. Without the qualifier, disagreements calcify: one side insists the jar exists, the other insists it doesn't, considering it will crack tomorrow, and both talk past each other. The old discipline forces the standpoint into the sentence itself, so that two claims which look contradictory can both be examined for the angle they were made from, rather than fought over as though only one could be right.
Three. An Old Parable, Briefly
The story of several people, each touching a different part of an elephant and describing a different animal, gets attached to this tradition often enough that it is worth naming plainly, and worth not over relying on. It illustrates partial access, not paradox. Each report is accurate about its own contact point and false as a claim about the whole. The discipline of standpoint language exists partly to keep a single partial report from being mistaken for the whole animal.
Four. What an Instrument Is Willing to Tell You
Modern physics has its own version of a limited hand on an elephant, though the reasons are different. Some measurements are simply built to answer one kind of question. A setup designed to catch a particle passing through a single slit will report particle-like hits. A setup that lets it pass through two slits at once will report an interference pattern, the signature of a wave. Neither setup is lying. Each is answering the question it was arranged to ask, and the answers do not obviously agree with each other.
Five. The Price of a Precise Answer
There is a further, stranger limit. For certain pairs of properties, such as where a particle is and how fast it is moving, sharpening your knowledge of one degrades what can be known of the other, not because your instruments are clumsy but because the properties themselves are not simultaneously well defined at that precision. This is not the same as ordinary ignorance that better tools could fix. It is a structural feature of how such systems behave when probed, discovered through decades of careful measurement, not guessed at.
Six. Resisting a Tempting Sentence
It would be satisfying to say the old standpoint discipline anticipated this modern limit, that a philosophy from centuries before laboratories somehow foresaw what particles do. I don't think that sentence earns its keep. One tradition is making a claim about language and the incompleteness of any single assertion about an object. The other is making a claim about physical systems and what can be jointly measured about them. The resemblance is a family one, not a lineage. Both refuse a false confidence, for their own reasons, in their own domains.
Seven. What the Discipline Buys
What I keep coming back to is smaller than any grand unification. Both traditions, in their own territory, ask you to notice the question before trusting the answer, to hold the specific conditions of an inquiry as part of what makes its result true. That is a modest thing to carry out of a jar and a slit experiment alike. Modest, and harder to practice than it sounds, especially on the day you are certain you already know what you're looking at.
